The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) has appealed to Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, for a motion in the House of Commons recognising the Mullivaikaal genocide.

A motion in the House, with all party support, “recognizing the mass atrocities that were committed in Mullivaikaal constitute genocide,” would at this time, “go a long way in correcting an injustice,” wrote Usha Sri Skanda Rajah of the TGTE in her letter to Trudeau:

“While commemoration events are being planned worldwide, in Canada and back in the homeland, particularly on the 18th of May, a ‘National Day of Mourning’, a motion in the Canadian House of Commons would go a long way towards correcting an injustice,” she wrote, as she submitted three salient points for inclusion:

1. The motion recognises the mass atrocities perpetrated in Mullivaikkaal, in the island of Sri Lanka where tens of thousands of innocent civilians were killed, constitute genocide.

2. The motion recognises the need for accountability and justice and for investigating and prosecuting senior military and political leaders for international mass atrocity crimes including war crimes, crimes against humanity, rape and genocide.

3. The motion calls on Sri Lanka to allow families to remember the dead and for commemoration events to be held in the Tamil homeland without fear, intimidation, hindrance, threats, arrests, detention or imprisonment.

Dear Rt. Hon. Prime Minister,

An Appeal for a Motion in the House of Commons Recognising the Mullivaikkaal Genocide
As Tamil Canadians commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Mullivaikkaal Genocide and the need for justice for victims remains uppermost in their minds, it would appease their heavy hearts and would be greatly comforting to them for the Liberal Party led by you, our Prime Minister, to raise a motion in the House of Commons recognising the mass atrocities that were committed in Mullivaikkaal, constitute genocide.

While commemoration events are being planned worldwide, in Canada and back in the homeland, particularly on the 18th of May, a ‘National Day of Mourning’, a motion in the Canadian House of Commons would go a long way towards correcting an injustice.

Tamil Canadians remember the time the House of Commons, endorsing the findings of a UN fact finding mission, unanimously voted on a motion to recognise the crimes against the Rohingya constitute genocide, urging the UN Security Council to refer the case to the International Criminal Court, calling for military generals to be investigated and prosecuted for the crime of genocide;

we also remember, when our Foreign Affairs Minister, the Hon. Chrystia Freeland, stated Canada will lead the international effort for justice and accountability for the Rohingya.

Recalling the March 2011 report of the UN Secretary General’s Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka stated "there were credible allegations that war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed during the final stages of the armed conflict and there could have been as many as 40,000 Tamil civilian deaths, most as a result of shelling by the Srilankan military";

Emphasising that according to the November 2012 Report of the UN Secretary-General’s Internal Review Panel on UN Action in Sri Lanka, over 70,000 people were killed during the final phase of the war in 2009;

And

Reiterating the former Bishop of Mannar, Rt. Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph’s submission to the LLRC (Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission) that 146, 679 people seem to be unaccounted for;

We therefore in honour of the victims are appealing to you to introduce a motion in the House of Commons and respectfully submit for your consideration the following salient points for inclusion:

1) The motion recognises the mass atrocities perpetrated in Mullivaikkaal, in the island of Sri Lanka where tens of thousands of innocent civilians were killed, constitute genocide.
