On the sidelines of 73rd UNGA last week, Ambassador Anatolio Ndong Mba conveys an invitation for Victor Mooney.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, October 1, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- On the sidelines of the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last week, Don Victor Mooney was given an ultimate surprise during remarks given by His Excellency, Anatolio Ndong Mba, Ambassador and Permanent Representative for Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations. Ambassador Ndong Mba was receiving an award on behalf of His Excellency, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, Head of State at Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn from the Cultural Museum of African Art - The Eric Edwards Collection.

After thanking the Cultural Museum of African Art - The Eric Edwards Collection for honoring President Obiang and recognizing its founder Mr. Eric Edwards, Ambassador Ndong Mba went on to share the story of Don Victor Mooney and Equatorial Guinea. In concluding remarks, Ambassador Ndong Mba said, the President is inviting Victor for the 50th Anniversary of Independence. At the podium, the Ambassador was accompanied by Her Excellency, Amparo Mele Colifa, Third Deputy Permanent Representative, Don Victor Mooney, Mr. Eric Edwards and Mr. Rob Fields, President and Executive Director of Weeksville Heritage Center. Respectfully in attendance included Su-Ping Gong Mooney, spouse of Don Victor Mooney, the Honoralble Annette Robinson, various other political, community, and art personalities.

On his fourth attempt, with the moral and financial support from President Obiang, Don Victor Mooney successfully rowed from Las Palmas, Canary Islands, which is located off the coast of West Africa to New York’s Brooklyn Bridge. The five-thousand mile plus journey took twenty-one months with many challenges along the way - 80 pound weight loss, shark attack, hijack by pirates and sleep deprivation. His mission was to encourage the global mobilization of voluntary HIV testing.

Equatorial Guinea is a strong fighter against HIV/AIDS and also partners with UNAIDS on numerous initiatives. The country's education and prevention programs has lowered the cases of People Living with HIV. Notwithstanding, free antiretroviral medicines are made availabile for its population.

Shortly after arriving at the Brooklyn Bridge in November 2015, President Obiang invited Don Victor Mooney to Equatorial Guinea where he was decorated, given nationality along with his family and gifted a home in Oyala, Equatorial Guinea.

My initial visit was breathtaking, but if I could highlight the most memorable moment, that would be our lunch with President Obiang at his home. Up close, I was given the opportunity to see this mans love for his nation and humanity. It also reminded me of Thanksgiving, when family sits around the table and enjoy each other's company, said Don Victor Mooney by telephone.

Since Don Victor Mooney’s historic transatlantic crossing by rowboat, he continues to be active in Equatorial Guinea roadmap for diversification and poverty reduction namely called Horizonte 2020 Development Plan and a vocal supporter of the country's leadership. Equatorial Guinea celebrates there 50th Anniversary of Independence on October 12.
