African Union approves set of reforms on financial contribution
Addis Ababa, ANGOLA, November 20 - The African Union (AU) approved last weekend in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), a set of reforms aimed at improving its functioning and turn into a less financial donors dependent institution.,
Angola was represented in the 11th AU extraordinary meeting by the Foreign Affairs minister, Manuel Augusto, in representation of the president, João Lourenço, which assessed among other aspects, proposals on its institutional reform launched in January 2017.
The Angolan diplomat, who did not disclose any amount agreed, said to expect that the new table of financial contributions enables AU to have full capacity to hold its programmes and reduce the current level of dependence on partners and international donors.
He said the reforms also establish a regime of "tighter" sanctions for states that do not meet their financial obligations. The foreign minister said that it was also decided to reduce the number of African Union commissioners from 10 to eight.
The official mentioned that Angola appealed for the recognition of the countries that make the largest financial contributions so that the organization can function. The summit also discussed the election of senior staff of the African Union Commission (AUC) as well as the financial and administrative reforms.
