Angola: President points to satisfactory outcome in DRC

LUANDA, ANGOLA, June 22 - Angolan head of State Joao Lourenco said Friday in Luanda that he believed in satisfactory outcome for crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo). ,

 

The president expressed optimism about the situation at the opening of the 20th Meeting of the SADC Policy, Defence and Security Organ.

 

João Lourenço said he believes that the situation in DRC, whose elections are set for December 23 this year, is heading towards a satisfactory outcome.

 

The Statesman hailed the important steps taken by DRC authorities to implement the San Silvestro agreements, saying that the move will ensure the organisation of presidential, legislative and provincial elections.

 

Also the head the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) for Political, Defence and Security Cooperation body, Joao Lourenço said that the completion of voter registration and the provision of the budget for the elections are signs that can contribute to the easing of internal tensions and the strengthening of mutual trust among the parties.

 

João Lourenço defended actions that in line with the positions of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union and the United Nations.

 

He said that these organisations converge on the need to respect for San Silvestre agreements, freely assumed by the main political authors, government, opposition and civil society of the DRC.

 

Despite the optimist about December 23 elections, the head of State warned all those involved in the settlement of the conflict in the DRC to remain committed to environment leading to peaceful and concessional elections.

 

At least 599 political parties are expected to run for the presidential elections in DR Congo.

 

In his address, the President João Lourenço also referred to the situation in the Kingdom of Lesotho and Madagascar.

 

The Angolan head of State called for a careful, responsible and realistic analysis of the situation, in view of ensuring the stability of peace, economic development in the region.
