British Virgin Islands Elects New Ministry-Level Leadership in Tourism

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) has elected the Premier and Minister responsible for Tourism, Andrew A. Fahie and Territorial At-Large Representative and Junior Minister for Tourism, Shereen Flax-Charles

The duo, alongside other new government members, has already begun their review of the industry, including meetings with key tourism industry partners, briefings by the BVI Tourist Board and inspection of key tourism facilities. While the destination was hit hard by the 2017 hurricanes, the BVI continues to recover as properties progress with renovations and reopenings. Currently, about 40 percent of rooms have reopened, including those from Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, Oil Nut Bay and Sir Richard Branson’s Necker IslandRosewood Little Dix Bay, a luxury resort on Virgin Gorda, expects to reopen in late 2019.

Fahie has served in the House of Assembly for the past 20 years as the representative for the First Electoral District. He served as Minister for Education and Culture from 2000-2003 and again from 2007-2011, and as Leader of the Opposition from 2017-2018. Fahie was previously an educator and businessman. 

Flax-Charles has been part of the tourism industry since childhood, having worked at the Fischer’s Cove Beach Hotel in Virgin Gorda, which is owned by her parents. The first-time legislator worked full time at the BVI Tourist Board in the capacities of Sister Islands Tourism Development Manager and Projects Manager for nearly 20 years. She is a singer with her band “It’s a Secret” and as calypsonian Queen Shereen.

Recently the the government of the British Virgin Islands honored its former chief minister Cyril B. Romney by renaming the Tortola Pier Park to Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park. The official ceremony took place at the facility on Friday, February 15
