Gymboree files for bankruptcy: Here are all the Indiana stores marked for closure

After reports surfaced that it could happen as soon as this week, Gymboree representatives have announced that the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will close hundreds of stores.

According to a press release issued late Wednesday, the bankruptcy filing will be followed by the company's Canadian subsidiary, Gymboree, Inc., seeking Canadian bankruptcy protection.

As a result, the company will begin the process of closing around 800 Gymboree and Crazy 8 stores in the United States and Canada, as well as pursuing a sale of its Janie and Jack brand. If a buyer for the Janie and Jack brand isn't found, those stores could be closed as well.

The Gymboree Play & Music education company, which split from Gymboree Group Inc. in July 2016 to become a standalone company owned by Gymbo Global Education Group, will not be impacted by the Chapter 11 and BIA filings.

"The company has worked diligently in recent months to explore options for Gymboree Group and its brands, and we are saddened and highly disappointed that we must move ahead with a wind-down of the Gymboree and Crazy 8 businesses," Gymboree Group CEO Shaz Kahng said in a statement. "At the same time, we are focused on using this process to preserve the Janie and Jack business – a strong brand that is poised to grow – by pursuing a sale of the business as a going concern."

There are currently two Janie and Jack stores in the Indianapolis area, one at The Fashion Mall and another at Edinburgh Premium Outlets.

Officials say all of the company's stores and online platforms remain open, and no timeframe for the closures was given. Details about upcoming liquidation sales were not available.
