Two steps forward, one step back

As I fondly hear of all the pay it forward generosity stories lately, in the festive season where family, friends and caring for others is of primary importance, it astonishes me to see people cross the employee lines and shop at the Co-op. And some with so much hate as they yell and gesture at the group.

These employees are willing to give up income and security to stand up unified for not accepting an agreement that would pay their co-workers substantially less for the same work. For this I respect and support their decision as it’s in line with my moral compass.

Humanity has worked so hard especially in the last few years to provide every person the right to live and work in a discrimination-free society where equality is a must, not a choice. So those who have made the conscious decision to support Co-op management in this dispute, as we live in a great country that provides everyone this free right, I do not support it as I believe it’s a moral wrong, but I will respect it as your choice.

Saskatoon Co-op strike

I have been a Co-op member all of my adult life, and a Saskatoon Co-op member since 1981. I completely support Roger Schmitz’s letter (SP, Dec. 15). I couldn’t have stated my concerns any more clearly. In the same paper I see an open letter to Grant Wicks and Saskatoon Co-op board members.

I agree with UFCW. If Saskatoon Co-op is so concerned about their members’ protection and convinced their bargaining position is righteous, they should have no hesitation to put it on the table before an arbitrator. The union is confident enough in their position. They’ve “called you out,” Grant Wicks. As a long time Co-op member I request that you “blink.”

Go to arbitration. This deadlock must end.

Good news!

I would like to congratulate the writers at The StarPhoenix for the many recent positive news stories.

It was refreshing to hear about the Montana’s customers paying it forward, about the man in the Pasqua hospital receiving a free haircut, Indigenous and Muslim students working together for the Food Bank. As well 500 volunteers preparing hampers for an expected 3,000 recipients at the Food Bank.

Keep up the good work!
