Saturday marked a potential changing of the guard in the South Coast Conference.
The SCC long has been the domain of Bourne and, most recently, Old Rochester/Fairhaven. But make way now for resurgent Wareham/Carver and Greater New Bedford.
Tyler Lovendale had a hat trick and assist and Wareham/Carver beat Bourne for the first time in 15 years, 5-3. Quirino DoCanto added a goal and three assists and Wylde Latulippe a goal and assist for the Vikings, whose last victory against Bourne was Jan. 31, 2004. The teams split their season series that year and shared the SCC title, although Bourne went on to win the state championship that year.
In Saturday’s win, Wareham/Carver played with heavy hearts in memory of Gerard Dunne, who died last week at age 30. Dunne was a sophomore goalie for Wareham (pre co-op with Carver) in that last victory against Bourne.
Meanwhile, the wait wasn’t quite as long for Greater New Bedford, but the Bears rode four goals from Jacob Lopes to a 5-2 victory against Old Rochester/Fairhaven. GNB last prevailed, 1-0, on Feb. 9, 2014, but before Saturday that was the Bears’ only win in its last 24 meetings dating back to the 2005-06 season.
It wasn’t all bad news for the “old guard” over the weekend, at least from Bourne’s standpoint. Hitting the ice again Sunday against ORR/Fairhaven, the Canalmen bounced back with a 4-2 victory. Max Hess scored twice, and Owen Lapworth and Morgan Hopwood once each for the Canalmen. Kyle Casano, Christian Mulkern and Joe Hess scored in Saturday’s loss for Bourne.
