LAS CRUCES, NM, November 14, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Robert James Tonn, PhD, MPH, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Tonn celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Tonn is a retired entomologist and parasitologist who most recently served as the chief of the planning management and operations unit in Geneva, Switzerland and in various locations for the World Health Organization between 1965 and 1987. He formerly spent two years as the director of the Taunton Field Station in Massachusetts and two years as a research associate at Louisiana State University in Costa Rica and New Orleans beginning in 1961. During his career, Dr. Tonn devoted many years as a consultant for the United States Agency for International Development, the WHO Division of Vector Biology and Control, and as an adjunct professor of parasitology at the University of Texas at El Paso.

As an entomologist and parasitologist who studied insects and parasites, their hosts and the relationship between them, Dr. Tonn was enthusiastic about his field, as well as teaching at the college level. Greatly inspired by his former parasitology professor, his teacher gave him a book to read, called "An American Doctors Odyssey: Adventures in Forty-Five Countries," that became Dr. Tonn's bible and source of motivation. Published in 1936, the book tells the story of an American doctor who relates his experiences in treating disease around the world, especially in East Asia and the Philippines.

During his career, Dr. Tonn has contributed numerous articles to peer reviewed journals and chapters to books in his area of expertise. He was a longstanding member of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the United States-Mexico Border Health Association, the American Mosquito Control Association, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the Masons. Dr. Tonn is also a member and former president of the Society of Vector Ecologist.

Recognized by being named to the Hall of Fame by the Hillsboro Public Schools in North Dakota, Dr. Tonn has also been cited in approximately 60 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, a Master of Public Health from the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City and a Doctor of Philosophy from Oklahoma State University. Additionally, Dr. Tonn has completed various Center for Disease Control short courses.
