New Mexico native Army Capt. tragically killed while walking home
Colorado Springs police are searching for the person who shot and killed a man over the weekend.
For years, New Mexico native U.S. Army Capt. Daniel Chamberlain Lehman put his life on the line, he was dedicated to fighting for his country. He was even an Afghanistan war veteran.
"He had a degree in nuclear physics and philosophy from West Point. He could go to any of the military academies, they all accepted him," said his father, Danny Lehman.
Danny Lehman was shocked when, of all places, his son was killed in Colorado Springs -- where he was stationed at Fort Carson.
Colorado Springs police say Daniel Lehman was shot at around 2 a.m. Saturday, His body was found near an intersection.
"He had gone to a restaurant and someplace to have a couple drinks and was walking back toward where he lived, I believe, and someone shot him in the chest," said Danny Lehman.
He says his son spoke several languages, loved people and was a friendly person.
"As far as cultures, people, their history, why they were the way they are," said Danny Lehman.
He isn't sure who'd want to hurt his son.
"It just seems tragic and senseless. That's all I can say. I still have myself, but my son was something I could reflect on every day with pride and joy," said Danny Lehman.
The bulk of Daniel Lehman's family lives here in New Mexico.
They'll be flying to Washington, D.C., in a few weeks for his funeral.
