The Trinidad and Tobago Women’s National Senior Team were dethroned as Caribbean champions on Independence Day, after a crushing 4-1 loss to Jamaica at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.
Four years ago, the Women Soca Warriors edged Jamaica 1-0 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, courtesy of a solitary Mariah Shade strike and a commanding performance in central defence by Arin King.

Up until the 69th minute, it looked like history might be repeating itself in Kingston. Kayla Taylor put the Warriors ahead after just 10 minutes with a superb shot into the far corner from 22 yards. It was her sixth goal in three 2018 Caribbean Championship outings, which made her the competition’s leading scorer. But then, the dam burst.
King failed to clear from a Jamaica corner kick, after sustained pressure by the hosts, and Giselle Washington’s snap shot from close range squirmed under Trinidad and Tobago custodian Kimika Forbes. The Warriors had already lost captain Tasha St Louis and defender Janelle Cunningham to injury by then. And they could not resist the skilful Jamaicans any longer.

Giant 21 year old striker Khadija Shaw, as skilful as she is strapping, produced two classy finishes in the 78 and 86th minutes while substitute Jody Brown added gloss the score line with a stoppage time goal off a Shaw assist. By then, Jamaica players were showboating to the delight of the partisan crowd. And the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) had lost the last regional trophy to their name.
Coach Anton Corneal’s team are still favoured to continue their France 2018 World Cup qualifying march, though, as they will advance to the Concacaf Championship once they avoid a loss by three clear goals against Bermuda on Sunday.
At present, Jamaica have a maximum of nine points from their three outings with a goal difference of plus-16 while Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago have six points each with a differential of plus-eight and plus-three goals respectively. Bermuda are fourth with a minus-one goal difference.
The top three Caribbean nations advance to the next stage.
