KOLKATA: Dilwar Hasan, the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terrorist arrested from Jharkhand on Wednesday, used to study in a prominent south Kolkata college till a couple of years ago. It was in 2016 that was approached by JMB ideologue Kausar’s right hand man Adil to join the outfit.
Adil, who was arrested along with Kausar by the NIA on Tuesday, had told Dilwar that he needed to protest against atrocities being committed against the minorities across south Asia.
STF officials said that soon after meeting Adil, Dilwar stopped going to his south Kolkata college. He, however, settled in the city and opened a mobile phone shop in central Kolkata. By then, he had made up his mi nd to join JMB.
TERRORIST

“It was through Adil that Dilwar alias Ali Hasan alias Umar met Kausar. Being a bright student, was soon inducted in to the top rung of the neo-JMB in Bengal,” claimed a police source.
Kausar had been trying to make his presence felt on Indian soil after suffering reverses since the 2014 Khagragarh blasts. “The security agencies were neutralizing his men in Bengal and RAB in Bangladesh was hugely successful in containing them there. He wanted to use the Rohingya issue to foment trouble in eastern India and formed a team to carry out the Bodh Gaya blasts. Dilwar was tasked with repeatedly carrying out the recce of Bodh Gaya. He also played a crucial role in planting the IEDs there on January 19,” claimed a STF source.

Meanwhile, STF officials said they were questioning Dilwar on the whereabouts of JMB’s most wanted man, Salauddin Ahmed alias Salauddin Salehin — its new chief who has brought about an ideological change to the terror organization. While it used to support the Al-Qaeda in the past, it is now a staunch advocate of the Islamic State (IS), said sources.
“Salauddin now wants to carry out attacks even in north Bengal, the first target being places frequented by Buddhist pilgrims. The Neo-JMB has managed to form at least seven local modules in Bengal, each having 10-12 members. Significantly, at least five of them are based in Murshidabad and formed in the past 18 months.
“We now have enough evidence to suggest that Salauddin had visited Dhuliyan in Murshidabad about nine months ago. He was flanked by several old timers who were once part of the old JMB Simulia-Khagragarh-Mokimnagar modules that operated between 2011-2014,” said a top Special Task Force official.
