Ville Platte native, Kyle Ardoin, officially became Louisiana’s temporary Secretary of State on May 8, 2018 after being named to the position left vacant by Tom Schedler in April.
Schedler resigned from the office amid harassment allegations filed by an employee of Schedler’s in a February 2018 lawsuit.
Ardoin, who has been selected to fill the SOS position until an election is held, was previously Schedler’s first assistant.
Ardoin, who served as first assistant secretary of state since 2010, was sworn into office on May 18, 2018.
During the swearing in, Ardoin said, “I stand before you today knowing the importance of the job that lies before me. It’s a job that hits right at the heart of our nation’s democracy and our states’ rights. Elections. We are preparing for the mid-term congressional elections as we speak, with qualifying less than two months away. At the same time, we are embarking on replacing our voting equipment in an effort to better secure our votes while providing voters with a quick and easy process in which to cast their ballot.”
Ardoin will remain the SOS until a special election is held this fall, and a new secretary of state is chosen to finish the remainder of the current term set to end in January 2020.
