The Beer Garden at Newfields opened April 1st. The news release invites: Rest or stroll with a cold glass of Among the Leaves, an exclusive draught beer from Sun King Brewery.”
Sun King describes Among the Leaves as “an Indiana Farmhouse Ale brewed especially for the IMA and their Spring Blossoms Exhibit. Harmonic flavors of slight vanilla, banana and cotton candy and balanced with floral notes and a crisp finish. 5.1% ABV 23 IBU”
Newfields adds, “Toast the arrival of spring, sample herbs from The Garden with mint iced tea or herbed goat cheese; there’s also wine, cider, lemonade, coffee, teas, outrageously good grilled pretzels from Pat’s Pretzels and a charcuterie board featuring meats from Turchetti’s Salumeria, rotating food trucks every Sunday (April–May) and a weekend pop-up Garden bar will host special tastings, workshops and demonstrations from local chefs and brewers. The second Saturday of each month, revelers can enjoy live music and classic board games from 5:30-8 p.m.”
Stephanie Perry, Newfield director of communications replied to my query about beer-related art works at the IMA with this list:
- The Artist’s Party, Joseph Delaney (American, 1904-1991), 2003.51, American Gallery, K205: Features what is thought to be a self-portrait of the artist (with his back to the viewer) along with other artists in a discussion over libations – the artist to the right is thought to be Jackson Pollack.
- Pitcher and beakers, artist: Paul Revere (American, 1735-1818), client: Ozias Goodwin, about 1800, American Gallery, K213: Artist is Paul Revere of the ‘One if by land, two if by sea’ fame
- Ma Jolie, Pablo Picasso (Spanish), 1913-14, 61.36, Currently in Alliance Gallery, K201 Picasso used Bass Ale images in some 40 paintings, the Bass Brewery was founded in 1777 and was once the best-selling beer in the UK
- Marriage at Cana, Master of San Baudelio de Berlanga (Spanish), 1125, fresco mounted on canvas, 58.23, Clowes Connector Gallery, C200: According to Christian tenants, Jesus’ first miracle–turning water into wine.
- The Concert, Valentin de Boulogne (French, 1591-1632), about 1615, 56.162, European Gallery, H214: Probably the closest to a ‘beer garden’ feel–musicians gathered to drink and celebrate.
- Battle Between Carnival and Lent, Jan Miense Molenaer (Dutch, about 1610-1668), about 1633-1634, 1998.96, European Gallery, H215: Depicts ‘the struggle between excess and abstinence–popular motif of Carnival celebrations that preceded the start of Lent–a beer tankard is in the center of the image. Interestingly, monks were many of the first European beer brewers.
- The Country Dance, Jean-Antoine Watteau (French, 1684-1721), about 1706-1710, 74.98, European Gallery, H213: This type of country dance was typically accompanied by libations.
