HS sports notebook: Archie Miller headline speaker at IBCA event

Archie Miller will be headline speaker at IBCA event later this month.

Indiana coach Archie Miller will be the headline speaker for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Spring Clinic on April 20 at Lawrence North.

Miller, who recently completed his first season at Indiana, will be joined on Friday night by Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson and Marian University women’s basketball coach Katie Geralds, a two-time national champion. Geralds is expected speak at 5:15 p.m., and followed by an awards and special recognition segment, will be followed by Hinson at 7:05 p.m. and Miller at 8:10 p.m.

 A number of high school coaches are expected to speak on April 20, including Jack Campbell of Chesterton (girls), Brownsburg’s Steve Lynch (boys) and Debbie Guckenberger (girls), Floyd Central’s Todd Sturgeon (boys). Sessions begin at noon on Friday. Saturday’s clinic runs from 8 a.m. to noon and will include presentations from Beech Grove’s Matt English (boys), Warren Central’s Stacy Mitchell (girls), Morristown’s Scott McClelland (boys), Greensburg’s Jason Simpson (girls), New Castle’s Daniel Cox (boys), Fairfield’s Brodie Garber (girls) and Castle’s Bob Meier (girls).

T.J. Rosene, the men’s coach at Emmanuel College in Georgia, is the keynote speaker April 21.

>> IBCA Coaches of Year: Several of the high school coaches listed above were voted as 2018 Bob King Coaches of the Year by their peers.

New Castle’s Cox, Beech Grove’s English, Morristown’s McClelland and Floyd Central’s Sturgeon were named as boys’ honorees, along with Michael Edison of LaVille and Rob Yoder of Westview.

The girls coaches named were Campbell of Chesterton, Garber of Fairfield, Guckenberger of Brownsburg, Mitchell of Warren Central, Meier of Castle and Simpson of Greensburg.

>> Lawrence Central names coach: Lawrence Central has named Antoine Wynne as its new girls basketball coach. Wynne, who works as a behavior mentor at Brook Park Elementary, coached girls basketball at Arlington for two seasons from 2016-18 and Howe for one season in 2013-14.

Wynne replaces Stephanie Keller, who resigned after five seasons. The Bears have not had a winning season since 2011-12.

>> Perry Meridian coaching change: Perry Meridian is expected to hire a new boys basketball coach at a school board meeting on Monday. Brent Keck resigned after leading the Falcons to a 66-106 record over eight seasons.

>> Carmel lineman commits: Carmel offensive lineman Caleb Shaffer, who will be a senior next season, committed to Miami of Ohio this week. Shaffer, who is ranked as the No. 21 prospect in the state in the 2019 class by 247sports, had an offer from Purdue and a number of other Mid-American Conference schools in addition to Miami. Former Carmel receiver Jalen Walker will be a redshirt freshman at Miami this fall. Another Carmel grad, Nate Becker, started at tight end last year as a junior.
