A driver is lucky to be alive after a bullet ripped through the windshield of his car as he drove through Lakewood last week.

“It’s scary, I heard four gunshots,” said Rafiq Khayat, who owns an auto shop at the corner of West 117 and Berea Road in Lakewood.

Around 4 p.m on Feb. 13, Khayat heard a bullet tear through the windshield of a Ford Ranger driving by.

“I was sitting in the office here with a couple of customers and I heard the gunshots,” Khayat said.

And not just one gunshot.

“Four, yeah four shots,” Khayat said.

The bullet missed the driver by inches landing on the passenger side.

Fortunately, the driver had no passengers.

The driver immediately called the police.

“I just got shot at in my car, like I know there’s what looks like a bullet hole going through my windshield right now,” he told a 911 dispatcher.

“Anytime anything like that happens it’s risky,” said Lakewood Police chief Tim Malley.

“Officers looked inside the car and they found what was a shell from a firearm,” Malley said.

Khayat believes the shots were fired from a speeding white sports car.

Malley says police have little information to go on but believes this was an isolated incident.

“There’s no way you could have prepared yourself for this to happen, or even protect yourself from just a random thing, we don’t know why it happened or who did it yet,” he said.

The driver was not injured.
