Rutgers to exhibit Lautenberg papers

Frank Lautenberg, New Jersey’s longest-serving U.S. senator, left an outsized imprint on state politics and national policy by the time he died while in office, in 2013. His papers, now curated and maintained by the Rutgers University Libraries, encompass 2,250 boxes of hats, buttons, campaign stickers, vinyl records, paper documents and other artifacts that, laid end to end, would stretch the length of seven football fields. Beginning Feb. 21, the Alexander Library at Rutgers University-New Brunswick will launch a public exhibit of the Frank R. Lautenberg Papers. The collection will stay permanently among the Rutgers library system’s Special Collections & University Archives.

Flu vaccine for healthcare workers

On Feb. 16, New Jersey Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal joined Janet L. Ready, president, Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center, to talk with hospital clinicians about the importance of health care workers getting vaccinated and to commend the hospital on its high staff vaccination rate. Boy Scout Troop 121 from Clinton is celebrating 80 years of scouting. On Feb. 10, the Boy Scouts gathered with family members, friends and civic leaders to celebrate the anniversary. To mark the occasion, the youngest scout in the troop and the oldest former member present shared in cutting the cake. Service members to inspect NJROTC cadets

The Linden High School Navy Junior ROTC’s annual inspection will be held Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the school’s gymnasium. More than 450 cadets will be in formation to be inspected by the Navy Recruiting District NYC Commanding Officer and his team of active duty service members. Uncle Floyd in benefit for church

A “Comedy Night with Uncle Floyd Vivano” will be at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the Somerville Elks Lodge 375 Union Ave., Bridgewater, for the benefit of Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament in Raritan Borough. Also performing will be Assembly Republican Leader Jon Bramnick, billed as “the Funniest Lawyer in New Jersey." The benefit will raise money for critical repairs to the landmark structure, the oldest Catholic church in Somerset County, at 52 W. Somerset St., Raritan. Tickets are $60 and include a full buffet with soft drinks, beer and wine. UCEDC gets $250,000 bank grant 

Wells Fargo & Company recently announced that Union County Economic Development Corporation (UCEDC) received a $250,000 grant in lending capital to aid its statewide funding and training programs for women and diverse small business owners. It is one of 12 organizations nationwide selected in Round 4 of the Wells Fargo Works for Small Business: Diverse Community Capital (DCC) program. King elected head of Flemington group

Bob King, co-owner of Lone Eagle Brewing, has been elected chairman of the Board of Directors of the Flemington Community Partnership. King replaces Paul Marciano, who for two years served as organization’s founding chairman, Before venturing into the craft beer start-up business, King spent more than 31 years in engineering and IT with AT&T/Lucent/Alcatel-Lucent and Merck. “I am delighted and excited to be elected to FCP board,” King said.” I look forward to working with both businesses and the community to continue the positive momentum that FCP has already created. The outlook for Flemington looks extremely bright."

Roman Catholic Bishop James F. Checchio of the Diocese of Metuchen observed the World Day of the Sick on Feb. 12 by celebrating a special Mass and visiting patients at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick. Checchio led a noon Mass in the hospital chapel, followed by visits with patients in various units. World Day of the Sick includes the Anointing of the Sick, one of the church’s seven sacraments. Club recruits future peace leaders

The Rotary Club of Branchburg is recruiting for the Rotary Peace Fellowship, a program that gives up to 100 fellows the opportunity to obtain professional development certificates or master’s degrees in Peace and Conflict Resolution. Rotary’s Peace Fellowship program provides academic and practical training to prepare scholars for leadership roles in solving conflicts around the world. Spelling bee held

The College District spelling bee for fourth- and fifth-graders was Feb. 11 at New Jersey Federation of Woman’s Clubs Headquarters on the Douglas College campus in New Brunswick. Five clubs held spelling bees and the top three spellers from those bees competed in the College District bee. The winners of the spelling bee will go on to compete in the state spelling bee to be held on Saturday, March 3, at the same location. Alexis Hogan, a 5th grader representing the Branchburg Woman’s Club, was declared the winner. Second place went to Satvik Suresh, a fifth-grader representing the Greater Hightstown Juniorettes Club. Third place was won by Advitiya Jadhav a fifth-grader representing the Boys Charity Group of the Princeton Woman’s Club.
