Caroline Marks wins key heat on Day 4 of Florida Pro

Staff reports

Caroline Marks is certainly familiar with the beach break at Sebastian Inlet.

Sunday, she let a pair of surfers from Hawaii know exactly how it's done.

The 15-year-old, and youngest qualifier ever for the World Tour, blasted the event's highest heat total of 17.17 (out of a possible 20) after unleashing her deadly backhand attack to earn a near-perfect 9.17 (out of a possible 10). She defeated Brisa Hennessy (10.53) and Coco Ho (9.60) in a fourth-round heat at the Ron Jon Florida Pro presented by Sunshine State Florida Lager.

Melbourne Beach native Caroline Marks put together rides of 8.00 and 9.17 Sunday to dominate her heat at Sebastian Inlet.

"I felt really good and feel like I have really good energy here, and I'm also just keeping it simple," Marks said. "My board's feeling good and I've talked with my dad looking at the waves, deciding where to sit, but there's not too much of a game plan other than to figure it out in the lineup. I know this wave so well and I'm just stoked to be home while feeling a lot of positive energy and that's carrying into the water."

Marks next faces Australia's Mikaela Greene in Round 5.

Tatiana Weston-Webb of Hawaii has moved into the fifth round in the Florida Pro.

Other winners in the QS6,000 event, the largest in North America this year, were top-seeded Tatiana Weston-Webb (13.00), Brazil's Silvana Lima (11.23), France's Pauline Ado (11.93) and a collection of Australians: Claire Bevilacqua, India Robinson, Isabella Nichols and Kelly Andrew.

"It feels really nice to be an enjoying this event and just taking it really mellow while hanging with my dad," Weston-Webb said. "We're down here every morning before my heats and every evening just to stay in the water, but I feel really relaxed in my heats."

Isabella Nichols won her Round 4 heat at the Florida Pro at Sebastian Inlet.

Vero Beach's Tommy Coleman was eliminated in Round 3.

Action is expected to resume Monday at 8 a.m. after organizers assess wave conditions before moving on.
