Fremont fends off Layton's late charge to earn region win

Layton • A home loss in what’s expected to be a tight Region 1 girls basketball race isn’t necessarily a cause for panic.

But adjustments? Well that’s bound to happen, and the Fremont Silverwolves caused some to be made Tuesday night.

The visiting Silverwolves ran their early season region record to a perfect 5-0 by beating Layton 42-39 as Fremont led from start to finish, although the end did give the home Lancers an opportunity to tie with a late 3.

It was a chance that went by the boards when Layton’s Brenda Gallegos was unable to get her last-second shot to the backboard as time ran out.

The 3-point tries that mattered most to Layton coach Van Price were early in the ballgame, and that’s where adjustments need to be made for the next encounter. Silverwolves senior guard Abby Broadbent had three treys in the first half to help Fremont lead by eight at half.

“You have the 3-point shooter, and we lost her,” Price said about Broadbent. “She had three 3s there in the first half, and that hurts. That’s big-time. That wasn’t supposed to happen. And their big girl [freshman Emma Calvert] presented some problems because she’s 6 [foot] 3.”

The visitors held a 26-15 lead after Haylee Doxey hit a 3-pointer for Fremont (12-2) to start the third.

“Practice went long the day before the game. We practiced a long time their plays, their defense — everything,” said Broadbent, who finished with a game-high 15 points. “I just think we came really prepared.”

Layton (10-3, 4-1) was prepared to stage a comeback, and the Lancers closed within three points three times in the last quarter.

The first time was after six straight points that culminated with a putback bucket by Kamryn Black with 4:45 left, but that was answered by a field goal by Doxey on an assist from Broadbent.

Two free throws by Black made it 37-34 just more than a minute later. This time, Broadbent found Mazzie Melaney inside for an easy score.

Layton last got within three came when Gallegos was fouled attempting a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left, and she hit all three free throws. After a Fremont miss at the free throw, the ball found its way into Gallegos’ hands for another chance from long range.

No foul was called this time, the shot missed and the Silverwolves had their important region road win.

Doxey finished with 12 points, while Layton was paced by Gallegos’ 10.

“Layton does a really good job of speeding you up in the full court,” Fremont coach Lisa Dalebout said. “I’m proud that they [the Silverwolves] didn’t get rattled completely. They (the Lancers) are savvy and smart, and they’ll make you do things you don’t normally have to deal with. No matter what, in Region 1, you’ve got a battle every single night. It’s a nice game to win early, to establish yourself in region, but it’s so far away from being over.”
