Two years ago, Frederick physician assistant Beth Smolko was simply going through the motions while regularly treating dozens of patients.

She felt that practicing medicine locally had become monotonous, and she was disheartened that it felt more like a business than anything else. This eventually prompted her to contact a friend who runs a medical clinic in Haiti.

I've been there. The people are so wonderful and appreciative of the aid that they get, but any help they receive is like a drop in the ocean. Most people cannot begin to imagine what it is like unless they visit in a helping capacity. Unfortunately, corruption in government is rampant and I am not sure there lives will ever be any different without drastic, radical and sudden change.
