Dauphin’s Lauryn Kuzyk and Team Manitoba suffered its first setback at the Canadian junior curling championships on Tuesday in Prince Albert, Sask.

Kuzyk, skip Mackenzie Zacharias, second Emily Zacharias and lead Caitlyn Labossiere gave up a steal of one in the 10th end in their final preliminary-round game to fall 6-5 to New Brunswick’s Justine Comeau (4-2). The loss prevented Manitoba, which defeated Prince Edward Island’s Lauren Ferguson (1-5) earlier in the day, from being undefeated heading into championship pool play, which begins today.

In the men’s event, Manitoba suffered a pair of losses and finished its pool in a four-way tie for first at 4-2. J.T. Ryan, Jacques Gauthier, Jordan Peters and Cole Chandler started the day with a 7-4 loss to Nova Scotia’s Owen Purcell (4-2) and followed that up with a 7-4 loss to Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan (4-2).

Manitoba’s record is good enough to advance to the championship pool. Only three of the eight teams in the pool advance to the playoff round.

Meanwhile, the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame announced its inductees will include Kaitlyn Lawes (Olympic curler), Rob Meakin (curler), Isla Hagborg (builder), Garry DeBlonde (curler-builder), Christ Pidzarko’s 1974 junior women’s team and Karen Fallis’s 1981 junior women’s team.

The induction dinner is May 5.
