Teacher honored at Wichita Falls ISD's Zundy Elementary

Zundy Elementary School teacher Rosendo "Ro" Ramos will have a little extra money to transform his classroom over the summer after winning the prestigious Dorothy Huffman Award for Creative Teaching. The award comes with a $1,000 check.

Rosendo "Ro" Ramos, left, a third grade teacher at Zundy Elementary, accepts the Dorothy Huffman Award from Wichita Falls ISD Foundation president Lance Spruiell and executive director Cheryl Pappan Thursday afternoon. The award honors outstanding third grade teachers in the WFISD.

Ramos thought he was attending a regular end-of-school-year meeting until the special presentation began and his name was called out to receive the award.

The Dorothy Huffman Award was started by Dr. Louie Huffman in memory of his wife, Dorothy, who taught third grade for her entire 38-year career in the WFISD.

She believed third grade was especially important in a young student's life as they prepare for the transition into fourth grade.

Rosendo "Ro" Ramos received the Dorothy Huffman Award Thursday at Zundy Elementary School. Ramos is a third grade teacher and according to the award, demonstrates sustained dedication to third grade students.

The recipient must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently a third grade teacher,
  • Demonstrates sustained dedication to third grade students and
  • Exemplifies creativity in their teaching.

Several fellow teachers and administrators went on to say what their favorite things about Mr. Ramos are, mentioning his calm demeanor, positivity, eagerness to help and ability to establish relationships with all of his students to make a greater impact.

Ramos hopes to create a more relaxed learning environment with flexible seating.

Ashley Lamb, a curriculum specialist for Wichita Falls ISD, talks about Zundy Elementary School teacher Rosendo "Ro" Ramos after he received the Dorothy Huffman Award for outstanding third grade teachers in WFISD.

"I want to be able to use some of this money to help me buy the furniture that I need to make it more comfortable, a different learning environment for students, for preparation for next year," he said.
