PMO: Post on Brunei sultan's US$1b donation fake

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has dismissed as fake a Facebook post that claimed the Sultan of Brunei had given a US$1 billion cash gift to the Malaysian government.

PMO spokesperson Endie Shazlie confirmed with Malaysiakini that the post, uploaded onto the 'Mukhriz Mahathir FC' Facebook page earlier this morning, was not true.

The now-deleted post had claimed that Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, who had paid Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad a visit yesterday, had given the sum to the Malaysian government to help restore the economy without expecting a repayment.

"Not into his personal account okay", the post had read - a subtle jab at the RM2.6 billion found in former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal accounts which he said was a donation from Saudi royalty.

The 'Mukhriz Mahathir FC' page administrator has since denied and apologised for the fake post, attributing it to an error from a fellow administrator.

Sultan Hassanal was the first foreign head of state to pay a courtesy call on Mahathir at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya yesterday. Mahathir was sworn-in as the nation's seventh premier on Thursday.
