Joint manager Neil Baker insists Louie Soares and Sam Togwell haven’t signed for Slough Town to simply go through the motions.
The experienced duo have put pen to paper for the Rebels’ promotion season in National League South, and Baker claims both players are hungry for success.
Midfielder Sam, brother of player/coach Lee, has plenty of football league experience having played in the Championship with Barnsley and Scunthorpe United. He’s spent the past two seasons with Eastleigh in the National League, but the prospect of less travel, playing alongside his brother and a decision to move away from the professional game have persuaded the 33-year-old to join the Rebels.
Soares is familiar to many of the Slough Town players from his time at Basing-stoke. Last season he was Hungerford Town’s players’ player and supporters player of the year and also won the club’s golden boot playing in a wide position. He’s played for Aldershot Town, Barnet and Southend United in the league and has gained international honours for Barbados.
“When you add these players to the rest of the squad from last season it makes you hopeful we can get off to a good start,” said Baker. “Sam’s not coming here just to go through the motions. He wants to do well for us and be a success here. Both players are still hungry for success.
“They’re 33 but both are very fit players.
“Sam wants to enjoy his football. He watched a number of our games at the back end of last season and was impressed with what he saw. His brother playing for the side was also a big draw.
“We initially thought he’d be looking to play for a Conference National side, but he lives locally and he’s done a lot of travelling in his career.
“He’s a top signing with 400 league games and 100 Championship games under his belt.
“We’re also delighted to have Louie. Last season he was Hungerford’s top scorer from out wide and he’s well known in the changing room from his time at Basingstoke.”
The Rebels will also give a pre-season trial to a player who’s been released by Coventry City, but Baker doesn’t expect there’ll be many more incoming signings.
The players return for pre-season training on July 3.
“We’re looking forward to it,” said Baker.
“We’re not coming up just to stay up by the skin of our teeth. We believe we can be competitive and, if you’re in mid-table at Christmas you’ve got a chance of the play-offs.”
