A Burke County teacher will be headed to Poland this summer for a Holocaust seminar.
Heidi Galloway, social studies teacher at Liberty Middle School, was selected as a scholarship recipient to attend the Holocaust Educator Seminar in Poland this summer. Galloway is one of five scholarship recipients selected from among 127 teachers who applied.
In June, Galloway and other teacher participants will visit the concentration camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka and Majdanek and learn about the Holocaust in the cities of Warsaw, Krakow and Lublin. They will attend a seminar at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw and a dialogue with Polish high school history teachers. The trip will be led by Rabbi Fred Guttman and veteran Holocaust educator Lee Holder.
“I will be using what I learn in Poland in my social studies classes and in the elective on the Holocaust that I will be teaching next year,” Galloway said. “I also hope to be a resource to other teachers who might be struggling with best practices when teaching about the Holocaust.”

Burke County Public Schools Superintendent Mike Swan said the district is excited that Galloway is getting this opportunity.
“We’re excited for Mrs. Galloway to bring a new perspective to the classroom while learning about the tragic history of the Holocaust on her trip to Poland,” Swan said. “She will be able to take her knowledge learned during this one-week seminar and apply it to the social studies curriculum. Thank you to NCCAT for awarding this once in a lifetime educational trip to one of our teachers.”
The scholarship, covering a majority of expenses for the trip, is funded by the NC Center for Advanced Teacher Development Foundation’s Holocaust Endowment Fund.
The Development Foundation of NCCAT, Inc. maintains a Holocaust Endowment Fund as part of NCCAT’s ongoing support of Holocaust education in North Carolina.
Some 40 teachers representing more than 20 North Carolina school systems will participate in this program.
