Less than week after fire forced evacuation of theater, Flying Monkey reopens
SIX DAYS AFTER THE FLYING MONKEY WAS EVACUATED, THE LIGHTS ARE BACK ON AND THE DOORS ARE BACK OPEN. THE NOISE GERRISH A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FRIDAY NIGHT FOR THE FIREFIGHTERS WHO RUSHED TO MAIN STREET LAST WEEKEND AFTER A FIRE BROKE OUT NEXT DOOR TO THE FLYING MONKEY PERFORMERS AND STAFF. EMERGENCY EXIT RIGHT THERE, MAKING SURE ALL 450 PEOPLE MADE IT OUT OKAY. EVERYONE VERY CALMLY, VERY CALMLY. WE’RE GOING TO EXIT THE BUILDING. WE HAVE A LITTLE EMERGENCY. OKAY? THERE WAS FLAMES OUT OF THIS BUILDING. I COULDN’T EVEN TELL YOU HOW HIGH I COULD SEE THEM OVER THE ROOF LINE OF MINE. BUT THEY HAD LADDER TRUCKS OUT AND WERE SPRAYING THE BUILDING, SO THERE’S ACTUALLY NO FIRE DAMAGE TO THE FLYING MONKEY WHATSOEVER. THAT FIRE LEFT AN EMPTY PIZZA SHOP WITH THE MOST DAMAGE, BUT THE VENUE’S GENERAL MANAGER SAYS A HAIR SALON NEXT DOOR AND THE FLYING MONKEY MADE IT OUT WITH JUST SOME SMOKE DAMAGE. THE FACT THAT THEY KEPT IT CONTAINED TO JUST THESE TWO STRUCTURES IS IS AN ABSOLUTE MIRACLE. THE TEAM SAYS IT’S BEEN A LONG WEEK OF CLEANING TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS SCRUBBED DOWN. THERE’S REALLY JUST THAT SMELL, THE STUFF THAT STICKS TO THE FABRICS. CONCERT GOERS SAY THEY WERE HORRIFIED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK. I WAS SHOCKED, AND OF COURSE I GOT RIGHT ON THE PHONE CALLING PEOPLE I KNOW IN THE AREA, FINDING OUT WHAT’S HAPPENING, AND WE’RE RELIEVED TO SEE THAT THIS HISTORIC VENUE WAS SPARED AND THAT EVERYONE WAS OKAY. THEY DID AN AWESOME JOB SAVING THE PLACE, ESPECIALLY IN SUCH A BUSY AREA. BUT EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED IN TOWN WHEN YOU’RE IN A TOWN LIKE THAT. ALL THE BUILDINGS YOU YOU HOPE THAT EVERYTHING DOESN’T BURN DOWN BECAUSE THAT’S LIKE THE LIFELINE. AS THE TEAM AT THE FLYING MONKEY SAY, THEY’RE JUST GRATEFUL EVERYONE CAN BE BACK TOGETHER AGAIN. THE SHOW GOES ON IN PLYMOUTH.
