Amid freezing temperatures, authorities announced the extension of the 'Wanteraktioun' night shelter in Findel until 28 April to safeguard the homeless from hypothermia.

To prevent the homeless from falling victim to hypothermia, the Ministry for Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees announced on Tuesday morning amid 0°C that the 'Wanteraktioun' night shelter in Findel would re-open until 28 April.

The Wanteraktioun, which translates to Winter Action, is a humanitarian initiative designed to prevent homeless people from falling victim to hypothermia during periods of extreme cold. Those at risk are housed in the multi-purpose emergency facility in Findel.

The annual Wanteraktioun usually starts on 15 November and ends on 15 April. It will thus be extended by another eight days, as was already the case in 2022.

The night shelter has seen some peak numbers this winter. In January, it welcomed up to 271 people, compared with a peak of 219 during the 2022–2023 season.

Since 1 January 2021, the Wanteraktioun has been managed by the 'Dräieck' non-profit, which is mad up of the three organisations Caritas Reception and Solidarity, the Luxembourg Red Cross, and Inter-Actions.
