The Amritsar rural police has lodged an FIR against Jagbir Singh and Kewal Singh of Bhittowind village of Amritsar for allegedly throwing stones at a group of farmers who were opposing BJP candidate Taranjeet Singh Sandhu’s visit to the village. The FIR was lodged on April 18 while the incident had happened on April 17 when Sandhu came to address the villagers. However, about 20-30 farmers under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) gathered near the venue. They were demanding justice for Shubhkaran Singh who was killed in firing by Haryana security forces at Shambhu border on February 21.

The group of farmers entered into an altercation with the supporters of Sandhu, two of whom allegedly threw stones on the protesters to make them run away. A video of the incident went viral, following which Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of KMM, demanded action against the stone-pelters.

“The farmers were protesting peacefully. They were attacked and a few of them were injured. Our protest against the BJP candidates will continue and we will continue questioning them why we are not being allowed to march towards Delhi and why Shubhkaran was killed,” Pandher told The Indian Express.

The two BJP supporters were booked under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation), 224 (illegal obstruction) and 34 (criminal act done by several persons).

Farmer unions have been protesting against BJP candidates in different constituencies. On Friday, BJP candidate Hans Raj Hans was questioned by members of BKU Ugrahan at Faridkot and he spoke at length over the mic saying that the ministers and people from Punjab gave Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrong feedback about farm laws and later made the PM a villain. Hans asserted that he himself never spoke a word against the farmers and will never say so even in future as he understood their pain. He started singing to avoid confrontation. When the farmers asked why the protesters sitting at Shambhu border were not being allowed to march ahead, he stated that it wasn’t in his hands and he recited shabad (sacred song) and said “Jo Bole So Nihaal, Sat Shri Akaal” before leaving.

Festive offer

Even BJP candidate Parampal Kaur Sidhu, daughter-in-law of senior Akali leader Sikander Singh Maluka, faced protest in Bathinda urban on Friday. Sources said that she had to pass through narrow lanes by foot leaving her vehicle behind. She waited at the house of an Akali leader for a few minutes before her vehicle arrived there.
