The Foreign Office has issued a fresh travel warning for 16 countries, following Iran's drone and missile attack on Israel. Those planning trips to Morocco, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, among others, are being urged to check travel advice before setting off.

This follows warnings that highlighted increased risks in over 18 countries, particularly those around the southern Mediterranean and the Middle East. This was due to heightened tensions following events in Israel and Palestine.

Iran launched an attack on Israel with 300 drones and missiles on Saturday night, most of which were intercepted and shot down. Despite temporary airspace closure, it was reopened on Sunday.

US President Joe Biden is leading diplomatic efforts to try to stop the situation from escalating. This follows an Iranian retaliation for an assault on their consular building in Syria earlier this month, which was widely blamed on Israel, and resulted in the loss of two Iranian generals.

Israel has claimed that Iran launched 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles, and over 120 ballistic missiles early Sunday. In the wake if that attack, a warning was issued by the Foreign Office advising all listed countries: "There is rising tension between Iran and Israel. Any military action could escalate quickly and could pose risks for the wider region. If you are in the region, or considering travel to the region, monitor news updates and continue to check FCDO travel advice for updates."

Countries mentioned in the alert include common holiday destinations like the United Arab Emirates - inclusive of Dubai, Morocco, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and Tunisia. Also noted are Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, Yemen, Qatar, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Oman, and Lebanon.

UK officials have issued a stern warning for British tourists, stating: "There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. You should remain vigilant at all times.

"UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad."

The Foreign Office further added to these warnings, remarking that a terror attack is 'likely' to occur indiscriminately, including in areas frequented by foreigners. It was highlighted that the Gulf region remains an area under constant scrutiny for terrorist threats, with announcements often being made about intentions to carry out attacks. Unfortunately, western interests, which may entail UK citizens, are often mentioned as targets.

The notice references potential targets including residential compounds, military sites, oil and transport infrastructure, aviation interests, places with large crowds such as restaurants, hotels, beaches, malls, and places of worship. All holidaymakers are advised to stay updated with the latest travel advice regarding their destination, which can be done visiting the Foreign Office website.
