Deputies: Man seriously hurt in shooting at Deltona park
One man was shot during a fight at a park in Deltona, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
The shooting happened at 10:50 p.m. Sunday at Manny Rodriguez Park on Overton Street. The sheriff's office says a 24-year-old man was hit by the gunfire and taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Investigators say before the gunfire, there was an 'altercation' involving several people at the park. Two cars, including a white Alfa Romeo, were taken from the scene on flatbed trucks by the sheriff's office.
Detectives have been interviewing multiple people but have not said whether anyone has been or will be arrested.
WESH 2 News caught up with Deltona District 4 commissioner Dana McCool. She lives down the street from Manny Rodriguez Park and said it's a good area.
"We were a very safe neighborhood," said McCool. "We have, you know, mischievous kids, but all neighborhoods do."
Within hours of the shooting, McCool spoke with the city manager and the sheriff, asking for more to be done to increase safety.
McCool shared that there are cameras at the park that are monitored regularly by the city, but another set of eyes wouldn't hurt.
"Our goal is to have all of the cameras online with the sheriff's office so that they have immediate access to the parks or information from the park cameras as something happens like this," McCooladded.
McCool feels these measures are necessary.
"When a community grows with it grows all types of situations," she said. "So we just have to follow the growth."
