A Carlisle fighter is set to represent England at the 2024 European Karate Championships.
Aiden Docherty will represent his country at the European Karate Senior Championships 2024 which are set to take place in Zadar, Croatia between Wednesday, May 8 and Sunday, May 12.
This follows an impressive 2023 for the Carlisle fighter, who also runs the Carlisle branch of Mitsuru Karate alongside his father David, that saw him win an under-21s and senior title and claim a podium place in 15 of the 17 tournaments he competed in.
After his son was selected to represent England at the European Championships, David was on hand to express his pride.
He said: "I am incredibly proud of Aidan, both as a sportsperson and outstanding character, he is the man I aspired to be.
"He is dedicated and has a great work ethic as well as being respectful, thoughtful, and a great role model.
"His selection for England comes off the back of hard training and a great tactical mind, earned by results from a rolling 12-month competition calendar.
"Along the journey Aidan has had many setbacks, with injuries and health issues, often competing when most would pull out, finding a way to win regardless of the difficulty faced.
"This strength of character is what I am most proud of."
