As denizens of New Orleans and travelers from all over the globe prepare for the 2023 edition of New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, late-night revelers are marking their calendars for the cavalcade of after-hours programming set to take over the Crescent City from April 28th through May 7th, 2023.

For the tenth year, the Nolafunk Series During Jazz Fest will offer music fans in New Orleans a culturally diverse slate of nighttime shows worthy of the festive season. Set to occur at venues throughout New Orleans including The Fillmore, Republic NOLA, and The Civic Theatre, this mix of performances by nationally touring bands and special super-jam summits featuring Big Easy music royalty will keep busy in the evening hours through the duration of Jazz Fest 2023.

Daniel Donato’s Cosmic NOLA – Friday, 4/28

Kicking off the Nolafunk series, genre-bending guitarist Daniel Donato will expand upon his typical Cosmic Country format for a celebration of New Orleans at Republic NOLA on April 28th. Dubbed Daniel Donato’s Cosmic NOLA, the special performance will feature added Crescent City credentials via trumpeter Branden Lewis (Preservation Hall Jazz Band) and bassist George Porter Jr. (The Meters), a shot of raw energy courtesy of Doom Flamingo vocalist Kanika Moore, and more friends to be announced.

Andy Frasco’s Big Night Out In The Big Easy – Saturday, 4/29

Live music ringleader Andy Frasco will pull double duty when he comes to New Orleans for Andy Frasco’s BIG NIGHT OUT IN THE BIG EASY. Presented by Nolafunk and Volume.com, Andy’s eventful evening at Republic NOLA on Saturday, April 29th will include a live taping of his celebrated Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast in addition to a full live performance by Frasco and his merry band of hooligans, The U.N.. that promises to tap into the boudnless collaborative energy on Jazz Fest by night. Billed guests for the night’s festivities include with special guests Anders Osborne and Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band).

On Saturday, April 29th, Nolafunk and Live Nation will present a blues blowout at The Fillmore New Orleans. Led by longstanding Southern blues-rock luminaries North Mississippi Allstars, this bill also features guitarist Tab Benoit, bred from nearby Baton Rouge, LA. Rounding out the lineup is climbing blues guitar maven Samantha Fish, a longtime friend of New Orleans, who will welcome Allman Brothers Band offspring Duane Betts for a special guest appearance.

Beloved Jazz Fest late-night tradition Dead Feat will return for another showcase during the second weekend of Jazz Fest on Thursday, May 4th at Republic NOLA. Combining the worlds of the Grateful Dead and Little Feat, Dead Feat will feature longtime Little Feat members Fred Tackett (guitar) and Kenny Gradney (bass) alongside frequent Dead collaborators Jackie Greene (guitar/vocals) and Jason Crosby (keyboards/trumpet/violin) and New Orleans favorite Anders Osborne (guitar/vocals).

On Thursday, May 4th, newly formed duo Samantha Fish and Jesse Dayton will lead a musical revue at The Civic Theatre. The pair of blues torchbearers will release their debut collaboration, Death Wish Blues, on May 19th. Ahead of the album’s release, audiences at The Civic will get a sneak peek of this high-energy concoction on a bill that also includes local unit The Rumble featuring Joseph Boudreaux Jr. and fellow Louisiana native Eric Johanson.

The Nth Power will continue its fan-favorite tradition of Jazz Fest cover sets by revisiting the group’s tribute to the music of Earth, Wind & Fire: the aptly named Earth, Wind & Power. First staged during Jazz Fest 2016, this latest edition of Earth, Wind & Power on Friday, May 5th at Republic NOLA will feature an array of musical luminaries from New Orleans and beyond including Dead & Company bassist Oteil Burbridge, Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno, Lettuce keyboardist/vocalist Nigel Hall, the Dumpstaphunk horn section, and more special guests to be announced.

The 10th edition of the Nolafunk Series During Jazz Fest will conclude with a two-night Voodoo Dead blowout. Set for May 6th and 7th at Republic NOLA, this send-off for the 2023 Jazz Fest season will bring in New Orleans icon George Porter Jr., the founding bassist for The Meters, to celebrate the music of the Grateful Dead with some Bayou flair alongside guitarists Al Schnier (moe.), Steve Kimock (Zero), and Jackie Greene (Phil Lesh) and drummer John Kimock (Mike Gordon). On the first night, Papa Mali and Mark Mullins of Bonerama will join in, with more special guests for the run to be announced.
