News from Wellington Water
A big thanks again to commuters and the local community, particularly businesses, for your patience and understanding while our crews safely complete work on the burst water pipe at the corner of Jervois Quay/Hunter Street, for a second day.

UPDATE: 3.45pm. Our crews have made some good progress on site, meaning that the two northbound lanes along Jervois Quay are now open for commuters.

We expect that our crews will remain on site at Jervois Quay and Hunter Street until Friday when works will be completed.

News from Wellington Water – March 21
Crews have been working all day to repair a burst drinking water pipe on the intersection of Hunter Street and Jervois Quay in central Wellington. It was reported about 7am.

Water was turned off to more than 100 CBD buildings. The affected area was 2-20 Victoria Street on both sides and 2-86 Jervois Quay on both sides (including Queens Wharf). Post Office Square was also affected.

There was also a fair amount of debris that the crews were clearing.

Traffic northbound on Jervois Quay was reduced to one lane, and the entrance to Hunter Street from Jervois Quay was closed to traffic.

Crews were working hard to excavate the pipe to repair it but unfortunately this is going to take longer than expected.

UPDATE: 2.25pm People located in the following areas are likely to be impacted by the pipe repair and unable to access water: *2-20 Victoria Street (both sides) * 2-86 Jervois Quay (both sides), as well as in Queens Wharf. This repair will affect traffic flows close to the impacted area. We ask that people, where possible, avoid the area particularly during peak hour traffic.

UPDATE: 8.20pm. Water has now been restored to impacted people and businesses although work will continue on site tomorrow. We advise commuters to expect delays in the area tomorrow, and if possible, consider alternative routes.

Plus ça change plus c’est la même chose.
March 13, 2020: “A water main burst on Jervois Quay near Hunter Street in the Wellington CBD early this morning. “ My money is on it being the same 200mm cast iron pipe laid in 1900 that failed this morning.
in 2020 they said: “The main was programmed for replacement within the 2030-2040 period.”… I guess the last failure didn’t change that timing.

The fluoride facility at the Wainuiomata Water Treatment Plant was turned off last night due to a plant shut down as a result of a power outage. The fluoride facility was off for a period of an hour and 25 mins – between 9.50PM to 11.15PM.
On Thursday, the Wainui Water Treatment Plant will be shut down for planned work. Supply from the plant will stop at 7:30 am. The plant will be back online, supplying at 6pm that day. During this time the fluoride facility will also be turned off.

At 5:00 AM the Porirua Wastewater Treatment Plant had an issue that caused the UV systems to shut down, resulting in partially treated wastewater being discharged at Rukatane Point.
    The discharge has now stopped.

And Wellington Council seeks to intensify development despite decrepit infrastructure in the city centre.

Yip. the same pipe as 3 years ago – almost to the day. “It was so far unclear how the cast iron 200mm pipe burst, but crews would better understand the underlying cause as works progressed.”
