Byron Community Market moving to CBD this Sunday

Cars out and people in!

From this Sunday (5 March) there will be less cars and more people in the centre of Byron Bay when the monthly Byron Bay Community Market moves from the beach front to the central business district (CBD).

The markets will be set up in the rail corridor, and spill into Railway Park and onto a section of Jonson Street.

Jonson Street, from Marvell Street to Byron Street, will now be closed to traffic on the first Sunday of each month.

Byron Shire Mayor, Michael Lyon, said the relocation of the markets from the beach front to the town centre will transform the CBD.

“I am really looking forward to seeing the centre of Byron Bay alive with the vibrancy and colour that markets create – I think this is going to be a great thing for the town,” Mayor Lyon said.

“I am hoping that everyone will leave their cars at home, or on the outskirts of town, and come along to enjoy a couple of hours meandering through stalls and eating delicious food,” he said.

Traffic detours will be in place for stall owners to set up and pack down and for the duration of the market and the Byron Bay bypass will allow drivers to avoid the central business district (CBD).

The relocation of the markets was funded via a grant from the NSW Govenment’s Streets as Shared Spaces program.

Electronic message boards will be in place, advising of the traffic and parking changes and information is also on Council’s website.
