After spending nearly six years in the development pipeline, Taron Egerton offered a promising update about a potential return as Gary "Eggsy" Unwin for Kingsman 3. Based on the comic book series created by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons, the Kingsman films follow the exploits of the titular private intelligence organization as they combat threats to global safety and stability. Beginning with 2014’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, Egerton last appeared as the street-wise civilian turned super spy Eggsy in the 2017 sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle. In 2021, director Matthew Vaughn also released a prequel, The King’s Man, which charted the formation of the Kingsman intelligence agency during the events of World War I.

Recently, Egerton reignited hope that the long-awaited Kingsman 3 may not be much further off. Speaking at the Newport Beach Film Festival UK, RadioTimes.com reports that Egerton was asked about his potential return to the series. Cautiously suggesting that another sequel may happen, he offered his hopes for where the next installment would find his character. Egerton expressed interest in exploring a mature and well-experienced Eggsy compared to the first film's rookie. Check out his comments below:

"I would like to see... if we go back and visit Eggsy, which might happen apparently, I think I want to know what being in that world for 10 years does to your head and I want to see him change.

What is it like to be a 35-year-old Kingsman because I’m not the kid anymore? So, there we are."

The original plans for Kingsman 3 date back to Vaughan’s work on Kingsman: The Golden Circle, with the director revealing that he and co-writer Jane Goldman had mapped out the plot during the second film's production. Initially, plans had been laid for the threequel to begin filming in 2019, directly following his work on the series’ prequel. However, between Disney’s acquisition of Fox and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on productions worldwide, the project never made it out of the pre-production phase.

Following these initial delays, Vaughan suggested in 2021 that filming was finally intended to get underway in September 2022, with a potential 2023 release date in mind. However, continuing to prove that even the best-laid plans are always subject to change in Hollywood circles, this deadline also would pass without any actual movement. Currently, there is still no clear indication when filming might finally get underway, but at least Egerton’s most recent comments suggest that the project is still quietly simmering away.

Kingsman 3 is not the only project set within the Kingsman universe that Vaughan has previously teased. While Kingsman 3 is likely the last installment that sees Eggsy and Harry working together on screen, the director did suggest that plans are also afoot for a television series featuring Kingsman’s US counterparts, the Statesman. With any luck, a definitive answer may come soon as to when Kingsman 3 and its future spinoffs will come to fruition.
