By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Salvadoran national living in Belize illegally for almost 6 years is fighting against being deported must prove he has ties to Belize.

On Monday, 24-year-old Nelson Ortiz appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, charged with failure to adhere to the conditions of a visitor’s permit.

Ortiz, who has been living illegally in Belize since 2017, pleaded guilty to the charge and told the court that he had applied for amnesty and that he has a daughter born to him in Belize, though he is no longer in a relationship with the child’s mother.

However, the Immigration Department said that there is no record of any such application, so Magistrate Khiana Gordon adjourned the matter for Friday, February 17, in order for him to prove that he has ties to Belize.

Meanwhile he was fined $3,000 for his guilty plea, as court records show that this is his second charge for failing to adhere to the conditions of a visitors permit.
