  • 'As the mayor knows, she is one - self-assured Philly fan,' he said, pausing at one point to choose the correct words to express first lady Jill Biden's zeal
  • Biden then said she once egged ona fight at a Flyers game, adding he would be 'sleeping alone' if he wasn't backing the Eagles in the upcoming Super Bowl

President Joe Biden opened a Friday afternoon event in Philadelphia by talking about his wife's intense love for the city's sports teams.

'As the mayor knows, she is one - self-assured Philly fan,' he said, pausing at one point to choose the correct words to express first lady Jill Biden's zeal.

'My wife hates violence, she says,' Biden continued. 'We went to a Flyers game a couple years ago. And the Secret Service is in a box, next to us, anyway. And a fight breaks out. And my wife who hates violence goes "get em, get em," jumping up. The Secret Service looks, "where the heck did that come from?"'

Biden made the point to definitively express that he would be rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl a week from Sunday.

'Go Eagles - Fly Eagles fly,' the president said. 'Now the good news is I happen to mean it, but even if I didn't I'd say it, you know why? Otherwise I'd be sleeping alone.'

Dr. Biden was born in New Jersey, but grew up in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, a town just north of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia sports fans have a reputation for being hostile, thanks to a 1968 incident in which Eagles fans were so angry at the team's poor season they booed Santa Claus.

Biden, with Vice President Kamala Harris in tow, visited Philly Friday afternoon to deliver a speech on his administration's initiative to replace lead pipes, attend a fundraiser and then speak at the Democratic National Committee's winter meeting.

'You think it's silly but water - the issue has to do with basic dignity,' Biden said. 'Every American deserves to be able to turn on their water tap or faucet and be able to drink clean water.'

'We're the richest, most prosperous nation in the world, water ought to be something that's guaranteed but unfortunately that's not the case,' he added.

He touted funds flowing toward replacing pipes on both sides of the Keystone State.

'I'm not mispeaking here,' the gaffe-prone president said when mentioning Pittsburgh's efforts.

At a White House event yesterday, he accidentally welcomed former President Bill Clinton to the Capitol Building and uttered 'more than half the women in my administration are women.'

At the Philly speech, the president - who had a childhood stutter - stumbled over the word 'calibration' as he read his speech from a teleprompter.

Dr. Biden - who is flying to California this weekend and will appear at the Grammys - was in attendance Sunday to see her Eagles beat the San Francisco 49ers and advance to the Super Bowl, where the Philly team will face off against the Kansas City Chiefs.

She was spotted in a private party suite seated next to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

She later posted a photo from the game standing alongside grandson Hunter, the son of the late Beau Biden.

It has yet to be announced if she'll travel to Arizona for the Super Bowl.
