This weekend in Anchorage: Alaska Ski for Women, high-flying acrobatics and a classic children’s tale hits the stage

The Alaska Ski for Women promises to be a major event this weekend drawing hundreds to Kincaid Park. But there are plenty of other events around town, including Cirque Mechanics Zephyr and, for the kids, a production of “The Velveteen Rabbit.”

Cirque Mechanics Zephyr: 8 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m./7:30 p.m. Saturday, Atwood Concert Hall, 621 W. Sixth Ave.

“A Whirlwind of Circus” is the theme of this show featuring mechanical wonders, circus gadgetry and astonishing acrobatics. The show is centered around a giant windmill mounted on a turntable where performers execute gravity-defying stunts. Subscription tickets start at $30.

The Velveteen Rabbit: 2 p.m. Saturday, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, 621 W. Sixth Ave.

The Pushcart Players bring this classic bedtime story to life as a production of the Alaska Junior Theater. There will be storytelling in the lobby starting at 1 p.m. Join the cast for a milk and cookies reception after the show. Tickets start at $11.50 for kids.

Alaska Ski for Women: 10 a.m. Sunday, Kincaid Park, 9401 Raspberry Road

The Ski for Women returns for a 27th year, raising money for organizations that work to stop domestic violence in Alaska. There will be three starts Sunday for classic, freestyle and the party wave. There is also a Friends and Family Ski on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Makers Market: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Atwood Hall, 4455 University Drive

This event features 45 of the most talented artists, crafters and makers from across the state and will also include food trucks.

ADK & Friends: Donald Glaude: 8 p.m. Saturday, 49th State Brewing Co., 717 W. Third Ave.

DJ Donald Glaude headlines this performance that includes locals DJ Ke, Bodelia James and Big Gay Mike. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

5th Annual Bike Art Show: 6-9 p.m. Friday, Trek Store, 530 E. Benson Blvd.

Local artists portray Anchorage’s vibrant bike culture through paintings, sculptures and mixed media pieces. Local musician and biker Dan Bailey will provide entertainment.

Corks for a Cause: 6-10 p.m. Friday, Kincaid Chalet, 9401 Raspberry Road

The 12th annual Corks for a Cause wine tasting fundraiser features live music by The Ken Peltier Band. Proceeds go to Guiding Influence to support their programs with Camp Iron Sights. Tickets are $70 in advance or $75 at the door.
