Ponniyin Selvan 1 Box Office: Aishwarya Rai Starrer Becomes Second-Highest Grossing Tamil Movie Globally

The Mani Ratnam-directed film 'Ponniyin Selvan: I' has now joined the coveted Rs. 500 crore club. The period drama is now the second Tamil movie to achieve this.

'Ponniyin Selvan: I', the finest masterpiece of Mani Ratnam, has finally entered the coveted Rs. 500 crore club after its release on September 30. The period drama starring Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is now the second Tamil film to accomplish this feat, following '2.0' starring Rajinikanth.

The movie has seen tremendous success at the box office both domestically and internationally since its premiere. It has now joined the exclusive Rs. 500 crore club globally with its worldwide earnings, raising the hype. Part one of 'Ponniyin Selvan' is still capturing viewers owing to word-of-mouth from the audience and favourable reviews from critics.

Reportedly, trade analyst Trinath reported that PS1's global box office took in over Rs. 500 crore.  "This week the film enters its 50th day of run in cinemas. It has now crossed Rs. 500 crore globally and continues to run in good numbers of screens everywhere. This is the second Tamil film after 2.0 to collect over Rs. 500 crore at the global box office," he stated

The popular Tamil actor Chiyaan Vikram, who portrayed the Chola prince Aditya Karikalan in the historical epic, also posted on his Twitter account to share posters celebrating the landmark of Rs 500 crore and 50 days.

With gross revenue of nearly Rs. 230 crore, it has surpassed SS Rajamouli's 'Baahubali 2' to become the highest-grossing movie in Tamil Nadu.

The movie chronicles Arulmozhivarman's (Ponniyin Selvan) early life before he became Chola Emperor Rajaraja I (947-1014). Filmmaker Mani Ratnam has announced that the second installment in the franchise will be released in another six to nine months.
