PM aims for the free trade with East Timor

Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed his desire for Cambodia and East Timor to explore the possibility of free trade together to further expand trade and investment.

Mr Hun Sen and José Ramos-Horta, President of the Republic of East Timor, met at the UN Headquarters, yesterday (EST), according to Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Hun Sen and President Ramos-Horta discussed the issue of Timor-Leste’s application for ASEAN membership. The Prime Minister emphasized that in the past 10 years, since Cambodia chaired ASEAN in 2012,the Premier pushed for the support for East Timor to join ASEAN.

The East Timorese President and his delegation expressed their great excitement for the announcement of the country’s potential in joining the ASEAN bloc.

The two state leaders also discussed strengthening trade and investment between the two countries. The President of East Timor expressed his hope that the relations and trade between East Timor and Cambodia will be even better in the future. The President also stressed that he would look into importing more goods from Cambodia.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the Cambodia-East Timor bilateral relations have improved due to mutual trust. Mr Hun Sen added that economic relations between the two countries are still limited, but Cambodia and Timor-Leste still hope to expandtheir trade.
