The 24-year-old man wanted for killing an elderly man in Philadelphia was captured in Lawrence Thursday night and is due to appear in a Boston courtroom Friday, Boston police said.

Wagner E. Tejeda-Pena was the subject of a publicity campaign by Boston police and was reported to be in Lawrence Thursday night, according to both Lawrence and Boston police.

In a posting on Facebook, Lawrence police wrote that officers pulled over a vehicle around 10:30 p.m. Thursday near Broadway and Manchester Street. “Tejeda-Pena was taken into custody without incident,’' Lawrence police wrote.

He was charged as fugitive from justice for the Philadelphia murder and then turned over to Boston police Fugitive Unit who was part of the search for the murder suspect, police said.

Tejeda-Pena is scheduled to be arraigned in West Roxbury Municipal Court Friday on two outstanding warrants stemming from violent assaults that took place in February according to court records. No additional details on the incidents in Boston were immediately available Friday.

According to Philadelphia police, Tejeda-Pena tried to shoot two people around 4:52 a.m. on June 21, but his gun jammed. The two victims tried to wrestle the gun away from him, but were unsuccessful, police wrote.

About 15 minutes later, police discovered the body of a 76-year-old man, described as a “random victim.” He had been shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:44 a.m., according to Philadelphia police.

This is a developing story and will be updated when new information becomes available.
