Gross violation of health guidelines was seen almost everywhere in the country on Wednesday while the daily Covid cases kept rising.

The country recorded 2,241 fresh Covid cases with no new death in a span of 24 hours till 8:00am on Wednesday, reported the Directorate General of Health Services.


On the day, the test positivity rate stood at 15.23 per cent as 14,712 samples were tested during the period.

With the latest figures, the cumulative death toll stood at 29,145 and the cumulative tally of cases at 19,71,602, since the detection of first Covid cases on March 8, 2020.

Out of the latest cases, the highest, 1,968 cases were reported in Dhaka division followed by 145 in Chattogram, 37 in Khulna, 31 in Rajshahi, 25 in Mymensingh, 24 in Barishal, nine in Sylhet and two in Rangpur divisions.

On Monday, Bangladesh saw daily new Covid cases climbing past the 2,000 mark after 127 days.

The past time the health directorate recorded more than 2,200 new cases in a day was on February 18.

The government on Tuesday issued instructions to all to avoid public gatherings and reinforce the ‘no mask, no service’ policy and mandatory use of masks everywhere in a bid to contain the rising trend of Covid cases in the country.

The Cabinet Division issued the new instructions and policies after the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 made six recommendations on the day to contain the further spread of Covid-19.

In the 25th epidemiological week that ended on Sunday, the health directorate reported 300 per cent increase in new weekly infections, compared with the 24th week.

Experts have warned that a new Covid outbreak is taking place as people are showing complete disregard to health guidelines such as avoiding gatherings and wearing of masks.
