The Royal Danish Navy (RDN) has deployed Schiebel’s uncrewed aerial system (UAS), Camcopter S-100, to conduct various maritime surveillance operations.

The remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) service is being provided by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).

According to the EMSA, a Camcopter S-100 UAS is deployed to support maritime surveillance activities for the Danish authorities for more than two months.

The S-100 is stationed in Skagen, the northernmost town of Denmark. It is supporting several maritime surveillance tasks, including detecting, verifying and informing about potential oil spills and discharges at sea.

The data captured by the UAS is shared live at the EMSA’s RPAS Data Centre, where users can monitor unusual activities at sea and ensure the safety and security of people and deployed vessels in the area.

Schiebel Group chairman Hans Georg Schiebel said: “Schiebel has been successfully working with EMSA in several European countries so far.

“We are proud that the S-100 is making such an essential impact, now also for the Royal Danish Navy.”

Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 is equipped with multiple sensors, an automatic identification system (AIS) receiver, an L3 Wescam electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) camera gimbal, and an overwatch imaging system, PT-8 Oceanwatch.

These technologies together enhance the maritime surveillance capabilities of the RDN.

The Camcopter can operate both over land and sea, during the day and night, and in all the weather conditions. It navigates using pre-programmed GPS waypoints or can be operated directly by a pilot control unit.

The vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capability of the aircraft allows it to operate independently without the support of launch or recovery equipment.
