HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A winter weather advisory remains in effect through 6 p.m. Sunday for the summit areas of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on Hawaii Island.

The advisory replaces a winter storm warning that was in effect earlier.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu said the advisory is for summit areas above 12,000 feet for up to two inches of additional snow.

Web cams atop both mountains showed some snow, especially at Mauna Kea. Some small patches of snow were visible at the Mokuaweoweo caldera atop Mauna Loa.

The road to the summit area of Mauna Kea is closed.

The snow is not expected to last very long. An upper disturbance responsible for the colder conditions and snowfall is weakening and moving away from the islands.
