Sweet Potato Home Alabama! Governor signs official state vegetable bill
Alabama now has an official state vegetable: the sweet potato.
The Alabama Legislature on Tuesday gave final approval to a bill to make the sweet potato the official state vegetable. The House of Representatives voted 94-4 for the bill, sending it Gov. Kay Ivey's for her signature.
Ivey's office said Friday that the governor signed the bill naming the sweet potato as the state vegetable.
Alabama, nicknamed the "Yellowhammer State" after the state bird, has a long list of official state emblems, including an official state fruit, rock, nut, tree, insect and even folk dance.
