A 33-year-old man has been arrested at Larnaca airport in connection with the import of 27kg of cannabis, police said on Tuesday.

Drug squad spokesman Stelios Sergides told CNA that as part of the inspections carried out by the customs department, in collaboration with the unit, a search was carried out in the luggage of a man from Greece who arrived Monday night from Athens.

“During the search, customs officers found in the luggage of the 33-year-old, a total of 128 nylon packages containing about 215 grams of cannabis each,” he said.

“In total, there was about 27 kilos of cannabis in the luggage and the man was arrested and detained for the case of import and possession of drugs, and possession of drugs for the purpose of supply”.

According to Sergides, police would examine whether assistance will be requested from Europol and Interpol in terms of finding the suppliers in Greece. The suspect’s associates in Cyprus would also be traced, he said.

“Initially, it seems that the man is a member of a criminal group that trafficked drugs to Cyprus,” he added.

The suspect is due to appear in Larnaca court later on Tuesday.
