OneWeb, a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications operator, co-owned by Bharti Global and the UK government, has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Kazakhstan government and local partners to drive the Central Asian nation’s ambitions to digitise its economy, boost connectivity and become a pioneer in satellite communications.

OneWeb has inked an MoU with subsidiaries of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of digital development, innovation and aerospace industry, the national satellite operator, Republican Centre of Space Communications, JSC and National Co Kazakhstan Gharysh Sapary and Ghalam LLP, a spacecraft component supplier.

“The government of Kazakhstan continues to see the importance of bridging the digital divide and enabling digitisation of its economy using innovative and modern satellite technology, and OneWeb has pledged to work together to bring about these opportunities for the country,” Bharti Enterprises chairman Sunil Mittal, who is in Kazakhstan to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s first human spaceflight, said in an official statement Monday.

Mittal, who is also OneWeb’s executive chairman, met Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Askar Mamin, and said the satellite operator “honours Gagarin’s legacy with a constellation of OneWeb satellites orbiting the earth to bring connectivity to all locations where it’s needed”.

The MoU encompasses several areas of cooperation, including the use of OneWeb’s low latency, high throughput satellite connectivity platform to provide broadband to remote and hard-to-reach rural communities, building a ground station to provide connectivity to Central Asian countries and ring in localisation of the supply chain for the company’s LEO satellites.

OneWeb’s Kazakhstan arm will facilitate the establishment of a Low Earth Orbit Centre of Excellence in the Central Asian country and enable OneWeb’s service delivery across the whole of Central Asia. It plans the first wave of network demonstrations in Kazakhstan by June 2021.

OneWeb recently launched 36 satellites by Arianespace from the Vostochny cosmodrome in Russia, paving the way for launching high-speed satellite broadband services in key global markets from late-2021, and in India by mid-2022.
