Acclaimed Irish Movie Calm With Horses Coming To Netflix Next Week

The acclaimed Irish movie Calm with Horses will be available to stream on Netflix in Ireland from Monday, October 26th.

The thriller is set in the west of Ireland and stars Irish actors Barry Keoghan and Niamh Algar as well as English actor Cosmo Jarvis.

The drama is the directorial feature debut of Nick Rowland, whose previous work includes Slap, a Bafta-nominated short film, and television episodes of the BBC prime time drama Hard Sun and Amazon's Ripper Street.

Joe Murtagh adapted the script from a short story in Young Skins, an acclaimed collection by Irish writer Colin Barrett.

Cosmo Jarvis plays Arm, while Barry Keoghan is his business partner Dympna Devers, and Niamh Algar plays Arm's ex-partner. The cast also includes Ned Dennehy, David Wilmot and Simone Kirby.

The movies was produced by DMC Film, the production company which was founded by Michael Fassbender and Conor McCaughan, who developed the project in tandem with Film4.

Electronic musician Blanck Mass composed the film’s soundtrack, who first came to prominence as half of cult band Fuck Buttons.

Altitude Film Sales has boarded international rights. Altitude Film Distribution and Element Pictures Distribution are looking after the film’s release in the UK and Ireland.

In terms of the reception of the movie, The Irish Times' Donald Clarke gave the movie 3 out 5 stars calling it a "tense" and "well-acted drama." The Guardian meanwhile gave it four our of five stars, calling it "An immersive tale of tortured masculinity and divided loyalties that pulls the viewer right into the raging bull mindset of its haunted protagonist."

Speaking about the movie Director Nick Rowland said he hopes after watching it, people feel thrilled and emotionally moved.
"Calm with Horses takes place in a dangerous crime world, but Arm’s relationship with his little boy, and his battle in coming to terms with the fact that his son is non-verbal and autistic, is at the heart of the story," he said.

Cosmo Jarvis meanwhile says “Calm with Horses has deep emotional drama, and visceral, violent action elements,

"Throughout all the terrible things that happen, Arm has to figure out what the right thing is to do. What is important in your life? Who is important?"

The movie was also recently nominated for five Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) including: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Barry Keoghan and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Niamh Algar.

Calm with Horses was filmed on location in both Galway and Clare.
