Third part of the series of interviews, entitled "Let's speak honestly: Serzh Sargsyan on the April [2016] War," with Armenia’s third President Serzh Sargsyan:

You were accused of losing 800 hectares of land in the April [2016] war. Was this really a victory?

Yes, it was a victory without a doubt. It was a victory over the adversary [Azerbaijan] who outnumbered, unexpectedly attacked, and used almost all the weapons in its arsenal. We defended all our towns and villages, and successfully repulsed their large-scale attacks. Their goal was not to occupy several hundred hectares of land. But let's talk about the 800 hectares. It turns out that in the case of more accurate measurements, it is 400 hectares, not 800. What I said after the war was that they were able to take back 800 hectares; that is, 0.1 percent of the 800,000-hectare security zone.

Why didn't you order the Armed Forces to take over that part of the security zone?

During the war I did not insist that our army take back that much territory; I gave priority to the lives of our soldiers. I was determined in my decision.
