Coronavirus in Brevard, June 5: 8 new cases, total at 439; 1,305 new cases in one day in Florida

Here are updates about coronavirus cases in Brevard, according to the Florida Department of Health, as of June 5, 2020.

Brevard registered eight new coronavirus cases, for a total of 439 people testing positive since the pandemic began, according to Friday morning's state Department of Health data.

There were no new deaths, according to the FDOH.

In all, Brevard has lost 13 people to the coronavirus, and victims ranged in age from 71 to 94 years old.

The FDOH always cautions that its data is provisional and subject to change.

The Brevard cases involve 428 residents and 11 non-residents. They range in age from 1 to 99 with a median age of 58. Of the Brevard residents, 197 are men and 231 female, FDOH data show.

Brevard County Commissioner Curt Smith said, "As of 8 a.m. Friday morning, four COVID-19 patients were hospitalized in Brevard County, and one of those is on a ventilator. There were 299 labs done on Thursday with a positivity rate of 2.3%."

The county has seen 66 hospitalizations. It's important to note that number does not refer to people currently hospitalized; instead, it's people who sought hospital treatment at some point.

The state DOH does not provide a count of people recovered.

The number of cases in Florida as of Friday morning was 61,488, up 1,305 from the previous day; 59,993 of those cases are Florida residents, FDOH data show. As of Friday, there have been 2,660 deaths, an increase of 53 from the previous day, and 10,794 hospitalizations. In total, 1,135,865 people have been tested with 61,488 positive and 1,073,452 negative, or 5.4% testing positive.

As of Friday, FDOH data show Brevard had tested 24,698, with 439 testing positive and 24,257 testing negative since the pandemic began. The county's percent positive is 1.8%.

In the U.S., cases totaled 1,875,402 as of Friday, and globally, there have been 6,675,011 cases, FDOH data show. Deaths in the U.S. totaled 108,278, globally 391,848.
